Leather & basket ware

Wolof women in Senegal, West Africa, weave these beautiful baskets from a local grass called njodax and plastic strips used in the production of bazin mats, which resemble prayer mats.
Leather is used widely for bags, jewellery and footwear often simply decorated with coloured pens or painted. The tuaregs use a much more sophisticated form of art by engraving filigree motives direct to the leather with a sharp pointed tool. Their goods are made from wood or card and then bound in leather.
